Reactivity of ovariectomised female rats after administration of injectable oestrogens by tem microscopy
Studia Universitatis Babes-Bolyai. Chemia. June 2016, Vol. 61 Issue 2, p195, 9 p.
INTRODUCTION Variations in estrogen levels strongly affect cell growth and metabolism in a variety of tissues including the vulvo-vaginal epithelium, the ovary and uterus. Estradiol is biosynthesized from progesterone, also [...]
The purpose of this electrone microscopy study was to identify and specify structural and ultrastructural changes occurring in the vulvar epithelium of ovariectomised female rats, as well as their reactivity to the administration of injectable oestrogens. We used 30 female Wistar white rats, distributed in four groups with 1 control group, to which oestrogenic treatment was administered. The hormone replacement therapy with injectable oestrogens (Estradiol, Estradurin, Sintofolin), at a dose of 0.2 mg/rat/day was administered for 14 days. Afterwards, all animals were sacrificed and vulvar biopsies were taken, which were then processed using optical microscopy (the semithin section technique) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. This study showed that injectable oestrogen treatment over a period of 14 consecutive days enables the recovery of each tissue layer, with regard to the structural and ultrastructural modifications arising in ovariectomised female rats. Keywords: oestrogens, optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, structure, atrophy, vulvar hyperplasia

Generalized Golden Ratios defined by means
In Applied Mathematics and Computation 1 January 2015 250:221-227
Golden Ratio is defined by a proportion corresponding to the geometric mean. We introduce a generalized Golden Ratio as a fixed point of an operator defined by an arbitrary mean satisfying certain conditions. An algorithm for the evaluation of the generalized Golden Ratio is obtained using Banach’s fixed point theorem. As applications we show that some problems in shape optimization correspond to some aesthetic standards introduced in the paper.

Repositioning metformin in cancer: genetics, drug targets, and new ways of delivery
Tumor Biology. June 2014, Vol. 35 Issue 6, p5101, 10 p.
After sitting many years on the shelves of drug stores as a harmless antidiabetic drug, metformin comes back in the spotlight of the scientific community as a surprisingly effective antineoplastic drug. Metformin targets multiple pathways that play pivotal roles in cancer progression, impacting various cellular processes, such as proliferation, cell death, metabolism, and even the cancer stemness features. The biomolecular characteristics of tumors, such as appropriate expression of organic cation transporters or genetic alterations including p53, K-ras, LKB1, and PI3K may impact metformin's anticancer efficiency. This could indicate a need for tumor genetic profiling in order to identify patients most likely to benefit from metformin treatment. Considering that the majority of experimental models suggest that higher, supra-clinical doses of metformin should be used in order to obtain an antineoplastic effect, new ways of drug delivery could be developed, such as metformin-loaded nanoparticles or incorporation of metformin into microparticles used in transarterial chemoembolization, with the aim of obtaining higher intratumoral drug concentrations and a targeted therapy which will ultimately maximize metformin's efficacy.

Nanopharmacology in translational hematology and oncology
International Journal of Nanomedicine. Annual, 2014, Vol. 9, p3465, 15 p.
Introduction Nanopharmacology is an interdisciplinary research field, which was developed as an interaction between chemistry, engineering, biology, and medicine, and it is currently receiving growing interest in the clinic. (1) [...]
Nanoparticles have displayed considerable promise for safely delivering therapeutic agents with miscellaneous therapeutic properties. Current progress in nanotechnology has put forward, in the last few years, several therapeutic strategies that could be integrated into clinical use by using constructs for molecular diagnosis, disease detection, cytostatic drug delivery, and nanoscale immunotherapy. In the hope of bringing the concept of nanopharmacology toward a viable and feasible clinical reality in a cancer center, the present report attempts to present the grounds for the use of cell-free nanoscale structures for molecular therapy in experimental hematology and oncology. Keywords: hematological malignancies, nanoparticles, translational medicine

Labor Integration with Persons with Disabilities in Public Institutions in Romania
Transylvanian Review of Administrative Sciences, Vol 7, Iss 33, Pp 109-123 (2011)

This research aims to investigate the extent to which the legislation aimed to improve and support the labor reinsertion of persons with disabilities is implemented by public institutions. The results suggest that the law provisions concerning labor reinsertion of persons with disabilities are followed to a lower extent than might be expected. Approximately 7% of the organizations that answered this survey and have more than 50 employees do not implement any of the provisions of the law, therefore having no employed persons with disabilities, not paying the contributions to the state budget, and without contracting of services from the protected workplaces. The other institutions employ fewer persons with disabilities than they should do (about 1% comparing to the 4% required by the law). Almost half of the public institutions prefer to use the second option provided by the law, namely to pay the contribution to the state budget instead of hiring persons with disabilities. Additional research is needed to extend this exploratory investigation.

THE FLOOD POTENTIAL AND MEASURES FOR FLOOD RISK MITIGATION IN TECUCI CITY
Aerul şi Apa: Componente ale Mediului, Vol 2015, Pp 56-63 (2015)
In the last half century, Tecuci City was hit several times by damaging floods, as it happened in 1972, 1973, 2003, 2004 and especially in 2007. These events led to the implementation of measures for flood risk mitigation. This paper highlights the flood potential in Tecuci City and reveals the measures that were or should be taken in order to mitigate the flood risk in this city. It is based on statistical analysis of hydrological data recorded on Bârlad, Rateş and Tecucel rivers and of data obtained by field investigations. While in the 1970s – 1980s the flood risk mitigation measures were mainly of structural type (Bârlad River’s embankment and channelization, Rateş channel achievement), after 2007, a greater attention was payed to managing Tecucel River and to non-structural measures.

N-Arylacyl O-sulfonated aminoglycosides as novel inhibitors of human neutrophil elastase, cathepsin G and proteinase 3.
Glycobiology; Jul2016, Vol. 26 Issue 7, p701-709, 9p
The balance between neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) and protease inhibitors (PIs) in the lung is a critical determinant for a number of chronic inflammatory lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis and acute lung injury. During activation at inflammatory sites, excessive release of NSPs such as human neutrophil elastase (HNE), proteinase 3 (Pr3) and cathepsin G (CatG), leads to destruction of the lung matrix and continued propagation of acute inflammation. Under normal conditions, PIs counteract these effects by inactivating NSPs; however, in chronic inflammatory lung diseases, there are insufficient amounts of PIs to mitigate damage. Therapeutic strategies are needed to modulate excessive NSP activity for the clinical management of chronic inflammatory lung diseases. In the study reported here, a panel of N-arylacyl O-sulfonated aminoglycosides was screened to identify inhibitors of the NSPs. Dose-dependent inhibitors for each individual serine proteasewere identified. Select compoundswere found to inhibitmultiple NSPs, including one lead structure that is shown to inhibit all three NSPs. Two lead compounds identified during the screen for each individual NSPwere further characterized as partial mixed inhibitors of CatG. Concentration-dependent inhibition of protease-mediated detachment of lung epithelial cells is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximately 7% of the organizations that answered this survey and have more than 50 employees do not implement any of the provisions of the law, therefore having no employed persons with disabilities, not paying the contributions to the state budget, and without contracting of services from the protected [...]
